Self Guided Learning - Mi'kmaq

 I went to French Catholic school in the outskirts of Toronto for the majority of my education.  I'd say 99% of the history taught to me was Canadian and most of that had to do with European settlers and the establishment of Catholicism within Ontario and Quebec with respect to the native population.

I know that I was taught a lot about the first nations for many years but I also know that I've forgotten most of it.  I remember random things like longhouses and small children being bribed with pulled taffy to go to catholic school.  I decided to take it upon myself to relearn the basics and to hopefully go more in-depth.  

When I was finished contemplating which tribe to start with, I announced my decision to Brent - The Micmacs.  And then he told me they were not a 'real' tribe and I was very stunned.

Turns out, the Micmacs are born of the union of a First Nations individual and a European individual and Louis Riel is the most famous of them all.  I know of him as we spent a great deal of time learning about his greatness however, I was always left with the impressions that he was half Micmac and half French.  Either my teacher wasn't so clear or the concept just went over my head I guess.

The second thing I learnt was that the people themselves spell is Mi'kmaq, so that's the way I will do it from now on.

It's late now so I'll continue the learning another day and I'll share the parts I find the most compelling.
